Armored Silicoflex alternative to Strip Seals – SR 429 (Wekiva Section 8)

Project Description:
In 2022, a $253M design-build project was awarded to The Lane Construction Corporation by the Central Florida Expressway Authority to improve access, traffic flow and enhance safety at the intersection of I-4 and State Rte. 417. The scope of work included the construction of new ramps, toll roads, replacing the expansion joints, and various other improvements in Seminole County. The design engineer for this project was DRMP.

R. J. Watson provided field supervision to help the design build team to properly install the expansion joints.

Construction began in early 2019, and was completed in 2022.

Design Challenges:
To provide a durable, watertight expansion joint system that will accommodate a high traffic volume, and high impact applications.

Expansion Joint Technical Information:
269 LF of Armored Silicoflex SF325 to accommodate 3 ¼” of total movement, from a maximum closure of ¾” to a maximum opening of 4”.
