Gordie Howe Bridge

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project, linking Windsor, Canada, and Detroit, USA, is a landmark infrastructure endeavor, bolstered by the contributions of R.J. Watson, Inc. This bridge is not just an engineering marvel but also a testament to international cooperation and economic revitalization. Featuring a striking cable-stayed design, the bridge stretches 2.5 kilometers with a record 853-meter clear span. It is designed for efficiency with three traffic lanes in each direction and a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists, linking to the Trans Canada Trail system.

Leading the project is Bridging North America, a consortium including ACS Infrastructure, Fluor, and Aecon, tasked with the comprehensive design, build, finance, operation, and maintenance of the bridge and its ports of entry. This consortium’s experience spans local and global scales, enhancing the project with profound infrastructure expertise, which also extends to the Michigan Interchange, maintained by the state of Michigan.

Construction efforts are driven by Dragados Canada, Fluor, and Aecon, with AECOM at the forefront of design. These firms prioritize safety and efficiency, creating a preventative safety culture that safeguards workers and the public.

Central to the project’s ethos is community engagement. Bridging North America is dedicated to involving local stakeholders, businesses, professional associations, unions, First Nations, and educational institutions, focusing on strengthening the local economy through job creation and skills training. Approximately 2,500 jobs are expected to be generated, spanning construction trades to professional services, with local unions and businesses playing a crucial role in workforce development and participation.

A key contributor to this transformative project, R.J. Watson, Inc., has supplied 110 high-load multirotational bearings for the U.S. approaches to the bridge, with capacities ranging from 439,000 lbs to 1,195,000 lbs. These critical components are instrumental in enhancing the structural integrity of the bridge, reflecting R.J. Watson’s commitment to innovation and quality in large-scale projects.

In partnership with key players like R.J. Watson, Inc., the Gordie Howe International Bridge project emerges as a beacon of innovative design and cross-border collaboration. This project is about more than just constructing a physical bridge—it’s about building a foundation for sustained economic growth and community development across the Windsor-Detroit region, ensuring a thriving future through strategic infrastructure investment.
