Bridge Design:

The design team for Skanska, and Walsh designed a network of vehicular roadways, including 17 new vehicular bridges, Concourse B pedestrian bridge, and a level 5 roof structure utilizing a total of 475 high load multi-rotational disc bearings.

Design Challenges:

Uplift Restriction. R. J. Watson engineers had to take special consideration in the design of the disc bearings to accommodate service uplift loads of 34 kips to 100 kips.

Bearing Technical Information:

540 high load multi-rotational disc bearings with a vertical service load that ranged from 66 kips to 3,200 kips. The horizontal load ranged between 10% to 40% of the vertical load. The longitudinal displacement for the expansion bearings ranged from 3” to 14.5”, and the transverse displacement ranged from 0.125” to 9”. The service rotation varied from ± 0.015 radians to ± 0.020 radians.

Bridge Design:

Initial construction began in 2017, and R. J. Watson was selected by the joint venture team to design and manufacture 736 high load multirotational disc bearings, and 88 seismic isolation bearings. A majority of the project will be completed in the Spring of 2022, and the entire project will be completed in 2024.

Design Challenges:

Uplift restriction. High horizontal loads. High rotational requirement. R. J. Watson engineers had to take special consideration in the design of the disc bearings to accommodate service uplift loads of 50 kips to 67 kips, horizontal loads up to 167% of the vertical load, and rotations as high as ± 0.059 radians.

Bearing Technical Information:

453 Guided Expansion multidirectional disc bearings, and 283 Fixed multidirectional disc bearings. The vertical service load ranged from 67 kips to 473 kips. The horizontal load ranged between 10% to 171% of the vertical load. The longitudinal displacement for the expansion bearings ranged from 3” to 7.5”, and the transverse displacement was designed for 0.125”. The service rotation varied from ± 0.015 radians to ± 0.039 radians. There were 7 multidirectional disc bearings that were designed to resist 50 kips of uplift service load.

88 EradiQuake seismic isolation bearings. The vertical service load ranged from 97 kips to 1,708 kips. The horizontal load ranged between 9% to 15% of the vertical load. The longitudinal displacement ranged from 1.37” to 5.862”, and the transverse displacement ranged from 1.164” to 2.2” of movement. The seismic displacement was designed for 1.75” of movement. The service rotation varied from ± 0.015 radians to ± 0.059 radians. There were 51 EradiQuake seismic isolation bearings specially designed to accommodate the larger displacements, and 3 EradiQuake seismic isolation bearings were designed to resist 67 kips of uplift service load.
