Jonathan Hulton Memorial Bridge – Pittsburgh, PA

The Jonathan Hulton Memorial Bridge, sitting on 32 R.J. Watson, Inc. Disktron Bearings, has won the 2018 Merit Award for Major Span Bridges, handed out by the National Steel Bridge Alliance. The four-lane, steel plate girder bridge has a total length of 1,632 feet, which includes a main span that is 500 feet long.

PennDOT selected Gannet Flemming, Inc.to design the structure in Oakmont, PA over the Allegheny River. The bearings used on the structure range in size from 154 kips of vertical service to 600 kips, with movement ranges of 3.4” to 6.2.” The bearings were designed to withstand a horizontal service load up to 54% that of the vertical service load and a rotation of 0.03 radians.
