New York’s LaGuardia Airport opened its Terminal C outer roadway system six months ahead of schedule. Two massive projects are underway totaling $8 billion dollars. The design of the bearings for both projects varied extremely considering there were over 1400 bearings installed. Several disk bearing variants were designed with bearings resisting vertical loads from 66 – 2330 kips, and 10″ of longitudinal displacement.
The first of the two major projects is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and is a joint venture with the Skanska-Walsh team along with the designers Hardesty + Hanover, Parsons Brinkerhoff and HOK. The roadway going in and out of the terminal was rebuilt with over 540 Disktron bearings.
The second project is headed up by owner Delta Airlines, a joint venture design team of STV, and Burns & McDonnell, and construction management by Satterfield & Pontikes Construction. Over 860 Disktron bearings were installed on the project.
