Sarah Mildred Long Bridge Opens to Traffic Sitting on Disktron Bearings

On March 30, 2018 the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge opened to traffic. This state of the art precast concrete segmental box girder bridge is jointly owned by the Maine and New Hampshire Departments of Transportation. Designed jointly by Hardesty and Hanover and Figg Bridge Engineers the bridge is a two level structure which includes a 300 foot movable lift span supported by 4-194 foot tall concrete lift towers. The General Contractor, Cianbro Corporation, installed 44 Disktron Bearings ranging from 700 to 3600 kips in vertical capacity with horizontal loads ranging from 10-37% of the vertical loads. The longitudinal displacements were on the order of 11 -24 inches and the rotation capacity of the bearings was 0.02 radians. In addition some of the bearings were designed for uplift resistance. This $158.5 Million project utilized the CM/GC delivery method which accelerated project completion and improved design quality and cost control.

Project Description:

Located in Kittery, ME & Portsmouth, New Hampshire over the Piscataqua River this 2-Level precast concrete segmental box girder, including a 300 ft. movable lift span, is supported by 4, 194 ft. tall, concrete lift towers. Top level is for vehicular traffic, bottom level is for rail traffic.
